Hocus Croakus
Published in Mass Market Paperback by William Morrow (August, 2004)
Author: Mary Daheim

Judith and Renie find murder at a casino.
Judith McMonigle Flynn and her cousin Renie have solved lots of crimes in the past. In this book Judith and her husband Joe have to move out of Hillside Manor, Judith's Seattle B&B, due to post-fire renovations. They join Renie and her husband Bill and head for the Stillasnowamish Resort Casino. Renie has a conference to attend there. Both Renie and Judith had to bring their mothers along. These two women constantly fight but end up sharing a room.

Judith discovers Salome, the resort magician's beautiful assistant, stabbed multiple times after the show. Pancho Green, the casino manager, recruits Joe, an ex-cop, to help investigate. Judith can't help but snoop. Joe allows Judith to question people regarding the murder, but he doesn't make it easy for her. Still, she finds a way to interrogate just about everyone. Renie tries to ignore all of it and gamble. That's tough to do with a cousin like Judith.

Add to this the fact that Judith's contractor for the renovations at the B&B is constantly calling with problems, and Judith ends up driving back into town trying to resolve those problems. Also, Judith is having a B&B built on nearby family land. There appear to be problems with the site and she has to try to resolve them too.

Once again Judith is on the trail of a killer. Renie is assisting, but only when Judith insists. These two are great together. They are very well constructed characters, and I enjoy reading about their many escapades.

I liked the setting of this resort casino. Daheim describes the area so well, I felt as though I'd been there.

The plot in this book is terrific. I wasn't able to figure it out ahead -- a real plus. I never feel Judith is overlooking clues -- I hate books where I am yelling at the protagonist to pay attention. Don't have to do that in this series.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book, and that you read the whole series. I know there are books I've missed and I plan to go back and read them. Mary Daheim, and her Bed and Breakfast series, is terrific!

Honolulu and Waikiki Handbook: The Island of Oahu
Published in Paperback by Moon Pubns (January, 1995)
Author: J. D. Bisignani
Average review score:

Truly excellent guidebook!
I read the second edition of this book before moving to Honolulu three years ago, and still find it a very useful reference. Joe Bisignani gives you tons of interesting and useful information in an enjoyable writing style that captures the mood of the islands. Anyone who is the least interested in exploring Oahu beyond Waikiki Beach will find this book useful. Unlike the writers of some competing guidebooks, Bisignani is honest about labeling expensive tourist traps as such (it is telling that most of them have also shown up in the "Honolulu Weekly" annual readers' choice of "Best place to cruelly misdirect tourists"). Inbetween all the hard facts, Bisignani also manages to give the reader an accurate portrayal of the social climate of Oahu. Unlike most guidebooks, this one has an extensive and excellent history section, and there are also many references to fascinating Polynesian legends throughout the book. Warmly recommended!

Hot & Spicy Southeast Asian Dishes: The Best Fiery Food from the Pacific Rim

Authors: Dave Dewitt, Mary Jane Wilan, and Melissa T. Stock

A well-rounded, DELICIOUS collection of Thai/Asian recipes!
Wonderful recipes which can be made hotter or milder according to your tastes. I'm using this book as part of a Thai cooking basket which I have prepared for wedding gifts for friends. You'll find a perfect sampling of delicious soups and entrees, among other things. Standards like Pad Thai are covered, but you'll be impressed with the other dishes, which, with a base of 8-10 ingredients such as garlic, jalepenos, fish sauce and chili paste (all which can be found in most comprehensive grocery stores), can be easily whipped up in a wok or just a plain large pan on top of your stove. Healthy and hot as you like, plunge right into Asian cooking with the help of this well-thought-out collection of recipes

Best Hawaii book ever from a frequent Hawaii traveler.
Having been to the islands almost a dozen times over the past 12 years, my wife and I found this book to be accurate as well as humorous. Mr. Runge's personal opinions are extremely insightful and right on the mark. Just one question, why hasn't this great book been revised? Well Jon?

Hula, Historical Perspectives (Pacific Anthropological Records, No 30)
Published in Paperback by Bishop Museum Pr (November, 1980)
Author: Dorothy B. Barrere
Average review score:

Mandatory for Hula Students
This wonderful book gives a complete historical perspective of the Hawaiian dance form known as the hula. The Hawaiians had no writing - their history was entirely oral. So for the history of the Hula prior to the arrival of Europeans in Hawai`i, we are entirely reliant on descriptions of the first European visitors to Hawai`i and on some early accounts written by Hawaiians who learned to write. Source material is scarce. When the missionaries arrived, they were, of course, shocked by the lascivious hula movements, and quickly made it illegal (in public). Fortunately for the hula and for all of us, King Kalakaua (1874-1891) loved the hula and was responsible for a revival that continues today. The annual hula festival on the Big Island - THE MERRY MONARCH FESTIVAL - honors his devotion to this art form. This book covers all of that, plus lots of information on the Hula Heiau (temple) on Kaua`i that is still heavily used today. You have to have this book if you are interested in hula at all.
